Overview
The Flying Electron RS232 Level Shifter Adapter Board is designed to allow easy use of a serial port with a
microcontroller. A RS232 Level Shifter is needed to use a serial port with a microcontroller because serial
port signaling voltages are -12V and +12V. If these voltages were applied directly to a +5V
microcontroller's TTL IO pins, the IO pins would burn out. The RS232 Level Shifter safely converts between
the serial port's -12V and +12V signals and the microcontroller's +5V and 0V signals.
Available Option: 6Ft Serial Cable
Example of Use
Step 1 - Connect serial cable to female serial port of FE_RS232.
Step 2 - Connect Power and RX (Receive)/ TX (Transmit) signals from FE_RS232 to microcontroller.
Step 3 - Connect CTS (Clear To Send) and RTS (Request To Send) from FE_RS232 to microcontroller (Optional).
Step 4 - Run microcontroller program to control RX, TX, CTS, and RTS lines for serial port communication.

Features
Serial Port Connector
Standard female D-SUB9 serial port connector. RX, TX, CTS, RTS, and GND signals are available.
Voltage Spike Protection
Designed to protect the microcontroller from voltage spikes from +30V to -30V on the serial port signal
lines.
MAX232 Level Shifter
Industry standard MAX232 level shifter IC guarantees full TIA / EIA-232F compliance at data rates up to
120kb/sec. Guaranteed to provide reliable communication to all TIA / EIA-232F compliant serial ports.
Hardware Flow Control
CTS (Clear to Send) and RTS (Request to Send) signals allow easy implementation of hardware flow control.
Easy Microcontroller Interface
Designed to interface with a standard microcontroller IO port. Only 2 bits of the IO port are needed for
serial port communication RX (Receive) and TX (Transmit) signals. If advanced hardware flow control
functionality is implemented, 2 more bits of the IO Port are needed for CTS (Clear To Send) and RTS
(Request To Send) signals.
Power Header
Extra power connections allow easy daisy chaining of power to other adapter boards or components.
Dimensions
• 2" x 1.25"
• 2 mounting holes spaced 1.75" on center for easy mounting to a chassis
